Timeless Motion
SOMArts Gallery, 934 Brannan St., San Francisco
February 18—March 23, 2016

Participating Artists: Paul Clipson, Keith Evans, Kerry Laitala, Jeanne Liotta, Kathleen Quillian, Scott Stark and Mark Wilson.

Seven artists known primarily for their work in experimental film and video present new work in the Timeless Motion exhibition at SOMArts Gallery that exposes the elemental components of moving image art through drawing, printmaking, collage, photography, projected light, sound and installation. The audience is given time and space to engage with moving image art in an intimate gallery setting in order to understand and appreciate how the illusion of cinema is both created and perceived. Spanning in scale from molecular to cosmic, the art works on display in Timeless Motion render the invisible visible by reconfiguring the elements of the cinematic form to examine time, image, sound and movement.

Complementing the exhibition is a series of events and workshops that further explore both the history and techniques involved in the creation of moving image art. These include a panel discussion with key scholars and curators discussing the history of underground cinema in the Bay Area; two workshops to introduce participants to resources and techniques that are an integral part of the creative process of moving image art, including cut-out animation and hand exposed camera-less filmmaking; a film screening in collaboration with Artists' Television Access; and three expanded cinema events featuring performances of live projected film and music collaborations from exhibiting and invited artists.

Timeless Motion is curated by Antonella Bonfanti, Kerry Laitala, Kathleen Quillian, Scott Stark and Mark Wilson.

Funding for Timeless Motion was generously provided by SOMArts Cultural Center, The Zellerbach Family Foundation, The Princess Grace Foundation and individual donors.
